White oak acorns that sprout a root in fall

September to October

Acorns of the white oak group begin to germinate soon after they fall, so in autumn you can find some with a root already poking out. Red oak group acorns stay dormant until spring.

Why this time of year

White oak group acorns fall in September and October, and they need no winter rest before sprouting, so a root can appear on the ground within days to weeks. Good acorn years are irregular, so some autumns a tree drops few or none.

How to notice it

  1. Under an oak, pick up fallen acorns and look at the pointed tip for a pale root (a radicle) pushing out through the shell.
  2. Check the leaves on the ground or the tree: rounded, smooth lobes point to the white oak group, and lobes with tiny bristle tips point to the red oak group.
  3. Compare acorns from both groups. Expect roots on some white oak group acorns and none on red oak group acorns.
  4. Leave the sprouted acorns where they lie, or press one into loose soil so the root can grow.

Try this with kids: Can you find an acorn that has already started growing a root? Which kind of leaf is lying near it, rounded or bristle-tipped?

Word to know: A “radicle” is the first root that pushes out of a sprouting seed.
