Red fox mousing: the listening leap onto hidden prey
When: November to March
A red fox hunting mice and voles stands still in a field, listens, then jumps high and dives headfirst onto prey it cannot see. You can watch it happen year round, and it may be easier to see in open fields once the grass is down or snow has fallen, at dawn and dusk along field edges.
Why this time of year
Foxes hunt this way all year. In late fall and winter, with the grass down or under snow, a fox hunting in an open field may be easier to pick out from a distance.
How to notice it
- At first light or around sunset, scan the edge where a mown field or meadow meets brush or woods - this edge is where foxes do much of their hunting.
- Look for a fox that stops dead, ears forward, head tilting side to side as it listens.
- Watch for the spring: a high, arching leap that ends with its face pushed into the grass or snow.
- After snow, check open fields by day for fox tracks that end in a small body-shaped dent where the fox dove in.
Try this with kids: Stay back and stay very still, like the fox. Can you spot the moment it tilts its head to listen before it jumps?
Safety
- Watch from a distance with binoculars and never walk toward a fox.
- Never feed a fox or leave food out for one; feeding makes foxes act tame and bold.
