Carolina wren song: the tea-kettle bird that sings all year

When: All year

The Carolina wren is a small rusty-brown wren with a bold white eyebrow that lives in Massachusetts all year. It is one of the few birds that sings in every month, so its loud 'tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle' rings out in late fall and winter too.

Why this time of year

Carolina wrens do not migrate. Pairs stay together through the winter, and the male keeps singing in all 12 months, so this is a song you can listen for on any day of the year.

How to notice it

  1. On a calm morning, stand still near brush piles, thickets or tangled shrubs at a yard or woodland edge and listen for a very loud, ringing 'tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle', several quick phrases in a row.
  2. Follow the sound low down, not up in the treetops. Look for a small reddish-brown bird with its tail cocked up and a bright white stripe over its eye.
  3. Listen for a second bird answering with a dry chatter while the first one sings: that is the pair singing a duet.
  4. If you keep a feeder, watch for one taking suet or peanuts on cold days.

Try this with kids: Can you sing back 'tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle' and count how many times the wren says it before it stops?
